Is homoeopathy a good career option for medical students? Eligibility and qualifications required
Homeopathy as a system of medicine is accepted more after the covid pandemic. Thanks to the wrong publicity that covid gave to this system of medicine via just two homeopathic meds Arsenic Album and Aspidosperma. Homeopathy has got more believers due to its healing results in different parts of India and abroad in the last decade, but covid has just given a push to a rolling stone and therefore more students are thinking of it as a career option.
The qualifications and procedures to get into any Homeopathic college are the same as getting into MBBS. Just the marks at which admissions cut off as less than MBBS. This is so because all the subjects taught and the duration of the course is also the same, only the subject of pharmacy is different.
There are a fair number of colleges in each state, but there are hardly any government colleges as with MBBS. Most colleges provide internship OPD as well as IPD in-house and peripheral in various departments. Few colleges do not have IPD which is fair as homeopathy is not yet accepted to the level where people prefer it in cases where hospitalization is needed but it feels shocking as few colleges do not even have OPD. Fake cases are maintained to keep the license
Any medical college degree means you get a license to study and practice medicine. Learning from books in a classroom is a base created using which real learning happens on the field with patients. So imagine the future of such doctors and their practices. It’s due to these doctors that homeopathy has got a bad reputation over many years. With every doctor that fails to give results the system is blamed, well this is not the case with modern medicine.
But the good thing is there is an option to transfer your internship to another college. So even if the distance or financial limitations do not allow you to study in the best college, you can have your internship in the best college within your university. Homeopaths are still walking on a thin rope to make a career for themselves and establish a name for the system.
Job opportunities in Homeopathy are expected to increase in the coming years. Homeopathy as a system of medicine has prominently evolved over the past two hundred and fifty years and is widely practiced globally as a complementary system of medicine. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), homeopathy is the second largest medical system in the world and is legally practiced in over 84 countries (including India, Germany, the UK, the US, France, and China, among others). A Homeopathy Research Institute (HRI) report states that India has the highest number of people (10 crores) who rely on Homeopathy for medical care. A freshly passed-out homeopath can earn 15,000 to 20,000 thousand rupees a month at the start. This can increase from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 3 lakh rupees a month. In private practice, senior homeopaths easily earn up to a crore a year.
Key skills in demand
Empathy, good listening skills, grounding in homeopathic philosophy and methodologies, a sound knowledge of anatomy and physiology and research, and most importantly an open mind and willingness to learn.
